Hey, I'm doing a video for a client, but strangely, the colors aren't the same when rendered, and, they change depending on the player I use...

The settings of my comp are :

Size : 1920x1080
Format : h264

Didn't touch anything else.

I tried with VLC, Windows Media Player and Quicktime, each one of them gives me a different color.

Is this a bug in After Effects, or am I just being dumb?

Thanks!!

you might want to check out andrew devis's ae color space tutorial:

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/devis_andrew/Assigning-colour-profi...

and read up on color profiles in ae in the manual.

but even with all that, not all media players and other software will utilize color profiles, so things may still look quite different depending on the software. also, not all formats (avi, mov, mpg, etc) and codecs write color profiles so there can be further issues depending on what you render from ae.

To add to Kevin's always-wise advice, I'd recommend NOT rendering to H.264 in AE. I'd render out lossless or uncompressed, and I'd use a dedicated compression application to convert it. H.264 benefits greatly from multipass encoding, which is something AE can't do.

That makes it sound like it's not After Effects that's changing the colors.

Media players are, in general, terrible at color management. They're not consistent at all.

Be sure to check your colors on the edvice that is actually going to be used for final playback when you've delivered your final product.
