Jagged Text problem
on Mar 12, 2011 at 5:31:54 pm

Hi,

I'm really hoping someone can help me with my problem. I have created a 1920 x 1080 HD sequence with square pixels at 24 frames per second. It is an extremely simple animation - the words simply move straight up or down on the screen.

I'm using Futura Condensed Medium and the width has been resized to 72%. The problem is that there is a very slight jagged edge on every letter other than those with straight edges. I'm typing the text directly into After Effects, which I thought was a vector based text editor so this wouldn't be an issue. I don't think the font is the issue as I've changed it to numerous different fonts (without applying any animation) and this problem persists.

Here is a still from the comp: http://f1.creativecow.net/1750/1750'>1750_comp1000578.tga.zip

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happening?? I would welcome a solution or a work around.

Thanks in advance

Does this occur just in the Composition panel (i.e., in previews), or does it occur in final output?

Are you using pixel aspect ratio correction in the Composition panel? The default for that is a low-quality scaling (which is just for previews). You can use the high-quality version by changing the Zoom Quality preference.

Are you zoomed in the Composition panel, or are you viewing at 100%?

Be sure to read the second note on this page:
"Zoom an image for preview"

"Note: After Effects renders vector objects before zooming (scaling for preview), so some vector objects may appear jagged when you zoom in on them. This apparent pixelation for zooms does not affect scaling of layers or rendering to final output. "

Hi Todd,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately this problem is occurring in the final output as well as in the composition. Here is a rendered Targa from the sequence for your reference:
http://f1.creativecow.net/1750/1750'>1750_comp1000578.tga.zip

It is a 1920 x 1080 square pixel composition at 24fps so I am not using pixel aspect ratio correction and I have been previewing at 100%.

The post house who are finishing the film have said that the jagged edges are quite severe when they project it in their screening room...

Any other thoughts or even workarounds?? I'm quite up against it and I really don't know how to remedy this.

Thanks again.

Here is a link to the AE file with just the text animation. http://f1.creativecow.net/1752/jagged-text-composition'>1752_jaggedtextsequence.aep.zip

I just looked at your project, and you've done exactly what I guessed. You haven't turned on continuous rasterization in your main title sequence comp.

Do that for all your text layers and it's sharp as a very sharp knife!

Ah continuous rasterization...that is exactly what went wrong. Can't believe I missed that. It's been driving me crazy! Thanks a million guys.

The text still looks (ever so) slightly jagged so I've put a Gaussian Blur effect on an adjustment layer with the blurriness set to 0.5.

Have you got the text layer in a subcomp and are doing the scaling/animation in a main comp without continuous rasterization?
It must be something to do with how you've set the animation up.

Or have you by accident clicked the 'draft quality' button? Although that shouldn't transfer through to the final render.

Thanks Todd for your advice, that made my day. I was struggling with jagged edges on my imported sequence animation and by changing zoom option to 100% its finally gone and the animation is smooth and have perfect AA.
