I think what I am trying to do is easy.

I have two seperate clips exported from FCP- both as DV.

I want to bring them into AE, and scale them down 50 percent and play side by side.

When I go to render, I am told I should use a lossless codec such as animation or PNG.

When I use Animation I get a blurred effect- it looks like the footage is going in and out of focus and a fast pace.

When I use PNG I am getting lines (interlace?) from footage. I have a feeling what I need to do is simple, but some advice would be greatly appreciated.

AE CS3, and FCP 6.0

Thanks,
Blithe

When you say DV, do you mean .dv or .mov (NTSC/DV)?

Pretty strange. However, I think you're wasting time doing this in AE. It's quite simple in FCP - just use the Motion tab in the viewer to scale down and reposition the clips. You can also turn on image + wireframe in the canvas window, and scale down and position the clips directly there.
Just put one clip on v1 and the other on v2 beforehand.

Is there something additional you're trying to accomplish with AE?
