After Effect w/ Twixtor trouble
on Feb 15, 2011 at 1:52:15 am

Hey guys, I've search the forums and got semi answers to some of the problems I'm having but I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

PC Windows 7 64 bit, latest drivers installed.

Premiere Pro/AE CS5

So I cut a clip I like in Premiere, it's one of many small clips. I trimmed it down (in timeline) from the larger original file to the parts I want I then import it into AE with use for twixtor. I set in keyframe points on the timeline where I want the speed change, in this case a slow down, to occur. When I do this, for some reason it applies to the whole entire clip, even though I imported a trimmed down version I did in premiere. Tried time remapping, control+alt paste, duration stuff I read.

I just dont get why its applying it to parts of the footage I didn't even import. I'm so confused and lost.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

I assume you are importing from premiere into AE using the dynamic link?
If so I would suggest trying to effect your twixtor manipulation within Premiere Pro instead of AE.
Otherwise I would simply render out the footage from premiere and load into AE for processing the standard way.

Thanks Graham. I pretty new to after effects and never thought of it that way. I just assumed the way I was doing it the right way, with Premiere and AE open at the same and going back and forth.

I'd much rather try to render it out then throw it in AE.

But this leads me to one more question..Is there any benefit to using a plugin (thats available for both Premiere and AE) in AE over Premiere or vice versa? When I installed Twixtor in AE I noticed it intsalled itself in Premiere as well. same goes for Magic bullet looks...

Is there any difference from using these plugins within AE compared to Premiere? And whats the point of going to AE for these plugins if they are also available within Premiere and able you to do the same stuff?

Sorry for all the questions...I just went out of my way to start to get AE going but I'm finding that I dont really need it?

[Jason Johnson] "...whats the point of going to AE for these plugins if they are also available within Premiere and able you to do the same stuff?"

One word: compositing.

You may find that you want to mask out or key something, or animate the video in some way, or have text tracked to some video, or put the video on the side of cube... or make it look like it's on the side of a building.

It's a lot easier to do such stuff in AE, which is built especially for the task, than it is in Premiere, which isn't.

Thanks Dave, that sheds some light on my confusion. That makes sense.

But what about the few tasks I described..Color correction (magic bullet) and twixtor (speed change)..Like I said I'm able to pull up either plugin in both programs..Should I use AE for these tasks or Premiere?

[Jason Johnson] "Should I use AE for these tasks or Premiere?"

That's where the case-by-case judgement of the motion graphics and compositing artist comes into play. There really aren't any hard-and-fast rules.

OK..I can understand that..I'd prefer hard set rules, haha, but that makes sense. I guess I will just have to do my own experimenting then.

I'm going to try to stay within Premiere then and see what happens.

Thanks everyone.

Dave gave me the general answer, but from your experience Graham, are there any benefits/negatives to using Twixtor within Premiere rather than AE? Thanks

I haven't ever actually had a need to use Twixtor within Premiere before so can't say with any authority but I would be very surprised if twixtor was any more or less capable in Premiere than AE. It is the exact same plugin after all and should operate with all the same features. The only difference may be observed with processing speed whilst caching to RAM but I doubt this would make a large difference.
