I'm editing an XDCAM-EX project in FCP, and would rather not transcode everything to ProRes or another intermediate if I can avoid it. I ran a basic test and didn't see a huge difference in performance between the two. Am I asking for trouble staying in EX?

Thanks!

This may be the After Effects forum, but as an FCP user, I have an answer and you're not going to like it: go with ProRes.

The reason: the XDCam codec is a long-gop codec, which is very processor-intensive, and the more of it you have, the harder FCP has to work. It usually gets unbearable the closer you get to the end of the project.

Your ONLY hope is to cut in a ProRes 422 timeline. You can try it, but I'm not making any guarantees if you're working on a long piece of video, or something with a bunch of quick cuts, or something that uses a lot of FCP effects.

Let me clarify: I already have the piece cut in FCP (and yes, it did give me some trouble, though I eased the pain a bit by working in a ProRes sequence). At this point, I just need to send a number of shots to AE for some compositing-- so regardless of how FCP handles it, is AE going to give me issues as well?

[Zak Ray] "...is AE going to give me issues as well?"

That depends on your version of AE. If you have AE 10, no.

If you have anything else, you'll be extremely wise to export clips using quicktime conversion into ProRes 422.

I do have AE 10... I think I'll give it a shot, then.

...and please do remember to render in ProRes 422, and not that horribly-lossy XDCam codec.
