MP4 File in After Effects CS4 Only Plays Audio
on Feb 3, 2011 at 7:53:30 am

Hi,

I'm having this problem that every time I import a .mp4 file in to After Effects, there's no video just the audio. I deleted the preferences and the only way I was able to see the video was when I changed the file extension to .mov. Is there a way that I can see the .mp4 in After Effect without having to change the extension on the files?

Thanks!!!

Try installing the latest K-lite codec pack off http://www.codecguide.com if you are on PC platform.

That is a bad idea.

The K-Lite codec pack interferes with the proper functioning of many applications. It displaces good codecs with broken ones.

I very strongly recommend removing K-Lite from any computer on which you intend to do serious work.

To give an idea that it's not just me saying this, note that there's a prominent warning on this download page for K-lite:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/K-Lite_Codec_Pack
"Warning! If you install all the included codecs/decoders you might get problem with other video software on your computer."

Are you using the trial or a full version? The trial version of AE doesn't really support MPEG files.

Alternatively, since you're still using CS4, this from Dave LaRonde may apply:
Dave's Stock Answer #1:

If the footage you imported into AE is any kind of the following -- footage in an HDV acquisition codec, MPEG1, MPEG2, mp4, m2t, H.261 or H.264 -- you need to convert it to a different codec.

These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame information. However, the frames in between do NOT have complete information. Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.

In order to maintain peak rendering efficiency, AE needs complete information for each and every frame. But because these kinds of footage contain only partial information, AE freaks out, resulting in a wide variety of problems.
This sort of issue appears to be fixed in CS5.

[Juan Carlos Valdez] "I'm having this problem that every time I import a .mp4 file in to After Effects, there's no video just the audio."

Todd's advice about fly-by-night codec packages is wise. But since you don't say which version of AE you run, it could also be the footage itself. The following applies for AE versions prior to the current AE 10:

Dave's Stock Answer #1:

If the footage you imported into AE is any kind of the following -- footage in an HDV acquisition codec, MPEG1, MPEG2, AVCHD, mp4, mts, m2t, H.261 or H.264 -- you need to convert it to a different codec.

These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame information. However, the frames in between do NOT have complete information. Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.

I'm a Mac guy, so I like to convert to Quicktime movies in the Animation or PNG codecs; both are lossless. I'll use Apple's Compressor, Adobe Media Encoder or Quicktime Pro to do it.

Dave, Dave, Dave, he DOES say what version he's got; it's in the subject of the thread! Also, I already got your Stock Answer in there :)

Now, don't I look like a dope!

Well, I guess that's what I get for reading just the post via email and not reading the whole thread.
