Rim light on alpha'd image

Hi guys,

hope you can offer some help.
I have a black and white logo image (using black to alpha).
I want to get a rim light running round the outside edge of the white logo.

I've tried using CC Light Sweep, but that just looks a bit lifeless.
Also, I've tried putting it into 3d, embossing slightly and lighting with a master white light and an orange (desired rim light colour) - which lacked control ahen in front of the image. I tried to place the light behind facing towards (as one would rim light a real scene) but the light had no effect (presumable as it's simply a flat image)

any ideas folks?

cheers

To obtain a true rim light effect you need a 3D logo with a light set behind. Using Zaxwerks Invigorator will get you there.
Also, if you duplicate the 2d logo layer, turn the bottom to white (use levels) and apply matte choker on the top layer, you may get something you can use.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've got something up using the matte choking method. Not exactly what I was after, but it's a good technique and I thank you for it :)

Well, you could always use the logo layers in a nested comp to create a little light wrap, too.

Here's how: it uses chroma keyed footage, but you can adapt it. It's an oldie, but a goodie:
