CS5 RAM preview not real-time (by a long shot)
on Jan 14, 2011 at 6:05:09 pm

I've searched this post, but haven't found a definitive answer on this. I'm getting about 12 fps on my RAM previews. I've disabled OpenGL. I'm running an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card. I have 8 gigs of RAM.

I even made a 720 x 540 comp with a solid moving by, and I STILL only get 12 fps (even after letting it loop for a while. Has anyone found an answer?

thanks!

first off, you are hitting the zero on the numbers pad to do a ram preview, not the space bar which writes to the drive, correct?

also, in preferences>video preview is it set to computer monitor only? 3rd party video i/o cards can often effect preview performance.

in preferences>previews, try setting ae to only use adaptive resolution and uncheck the option to use opengl.

if that doesn't help (or you already had those settings) quit ae and try resetting the prefs by holding alt+ctrl+shift (win) or option+cmd+shift (osx) and launching ae again.

if it's still not working few other things would be good to know:
  • is this a new problem, you has it been happening since the install?
  • did you install the latest update (10.0.1)?
  • what os are you using?

I had Open GL off, but I couldn't find the Adaptive Resolution (I only see 1/8, 1/4, 1/2).

osx v10.6.6 is the latest 10.6 (not saying that's the problem, but you may want to update).

also, the latest ae cs5 is version 10.0.1, and that is a very important update for cs5, so you should definitely update that if you haven't.

you'll also want to make sure that you have the latest version of quicktime 7 installed (7.6.6 i think). i don't think there's been a resolve with quicktime x yet with pro apps... but i haven't been following that.

if you have dual monitors, you might try disconnecting one, rebooting and see what happens for previews.

...to add to Kevin's recommendations, I'd also try turning multiprocessing off.

I don't use it on my 8GB Mac Pro at work. I don't think 8 gigs is really enough to make multiprocessing work well enough to live up to people's expectations.

Hey Kurt,

I was having the same problem and may have come up with a solution. In Preferences/Previews switch Color Management Quality to "More Accurate". Seems counter-intuitive to me, but my previews are in realtime since doing that.

Please post back and let us know if that fixed your problem as well.

Thanks,
Kevin
