What's the simplest way to create a floating 3D timeline of events in After Effects? Kind of like you see on NBC news where video will be playing and then zoom back in space while the next video zoom's forward in space, all while seeing a zoomed back window before and after the one that's playing closest to the screen in space.

Create some solids the size of your comp, turn them in 3d layers and position them in 3d space as you need. Precomp each one leaving attributes in the initial comp. You can then open each and fill in a video and whatever type of frame you want. After that it's just a matter of animating the camera and each individual "screen" to match your vision.

You should look into the Sure Target product from Video Copilot for that last step of animating your camera. It seems like the type of thing that would benefit you.
