Z position to scale? or 3d flare

I've been following video copilot's tutorial on smoke trails with particular and optical flares, but i have been trying to use just the built in plugins to achieve the same result. I have been pretty successful with the smoke trails themselves, but I run in to trouble with the lens flares. I tried linking the 2d flare's scale to the null object's z position and the x and y to the null's x and y position. however, the z position goes from a negetive number to a positive number, and the the scale then goes in reverse. Is there a simple expression that would make the scale relative while keeping it in the same position as the null? or is there an easy, free way to create a 3d flare without using any external plugins?

I just joined so i'm not sure if this should belong in the AE expressions section, so please tell me if it should

the work-around was to simply have a small particle system with a low velocity following the null, then apply a tint and glow effect. making the particle "explosive" made a pretty good bright light/lens flare
