I am looking for a way to create intricate designs like the ones seen in Iron Man 2 (see the link below for an awesome video on the FX breakdown for that film).

I am thinking that they have to be using some sort of automation or scripting to make designs that intricate. Drawing those or designing those by hand using AE or Illustrator would take forever.

Can anybody point me in the right direction as to were I can find some good scripts to help me make some great shape layer designs in AE?

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that various design elements were created in Illustrator, and that compositing was done in AE, but a TON of that stuff was created in a 3D application... complete with in-house, proprietary software modifications to boot! That's why Hollywood effects houses get paid The Big Bucks.

Have you been to AEnhancers?

Thanks for the link!
So you really think all of those intricate lines and shapes layered in other lines and shapes were done by hand in Illustrator? Quite a task. I guess Hollywood has the time though.

Thanks.

Like Dave said, there's a lot of 3D animation in those effects.

Both Perception and Pixel Liberation Front used C4D and AE when developing the HUDs:

Here's Perception's case study on their work for IM2:

A brief marketing blurb from MAXON on C4D's use in IM2:

And finally, an older article and podcast, including information on the HUDs in the first Ironman:

I should add a couple other notes:

Andrew Kramer has a Video Copilot tutorial on Futuristic HUDs [link].

You might also look into any of Mark Coleran's work.

What sells the Iron Man gfx is the sheer volume of the assets. Not sure there's a way of making stuff look that good via a script in AE.

Depending on what your end usage is, you could maybe check out...

http://www.digitaljuice.com/products/products.asp?pid=1138

There's shed-loads of ready made assets there that can be stripped apart and adapted to your taste, and it gives you tons of options right off the bat. If you're looking to be a connoisseur and create everything from the ground up it's probably not for you, but if you want a quick set of perfect Iron Man assets to use instantly, it's ideal.
