"What is the difference between exporting and pre-rendering?"
Exporting in AE is rendering. So there is really no difference. Prerendering is simply rendering a lossless file and replacing the item in the AE timeline with the rendered file.
"also, how do i export a section of the timeline?"
Set your work area to the section you want to render and make sure in your render settings that you have it set to render work area only.

You seem rather new to AE. Welcome! I highly suggest you check out these (free!) resources. They'll cover a lot of these basics for you and give you a great foundation which will help remove a lot of the frustration from using After Effects.

I want to export four seperate clips on the same timeline via the render que. I move the in out section over those clips and add to render que, make sure that the setting is "work area only" but all that is rendered is where the in/out section is currently placed within the composition (hope this makes sense). I am definitely doing something simple incorrectly. Any advice? Thanks

[adam chesbrough] "I want to export four seperate clips on the same timeline via the render que. "

Copy the comp three times in the project window. Set the work area to each different clip in each of the comps. Add 'em to the render queue and have at it.

Thanks, thought there might have been a solution on a single timeline, oh well.
