I used Andrew Kramer's wonderful tutorial on the Earth Zoom technique for a client. But it was hard and time-consuming! Just getting the proper imagery for my specific location was tough.

Since then I've seen the "earth zoom" technique frequently on some cable tv network, and it makes me wonder whether there is an easier alternative. I'd like to use the technique for a client with numerous worldwide locations, and it would be prohibitive to use the Andrew Kramer / After Effects technique.

Is there an easier way to do this? Google Earth animation?

As you've noted, many news organizations use Google Earth for these animations.

I don't watch as much as I'd like to -- are those animations "clean" or do they have to have the Google navigation supers?

I'm pretty sure you are required by the license to keep the Google Earth supers.

You can also use Curious from Vizrt ( or Vizrt World now)- that's pretty fast and has tons of options.

pretty expensive though...

Nasa imagery might also be an option since a fair amount is un copyrighted and free for commercial use.

Make sure you read the image use policy (link at bottom of page)
