I have been having problem collecting files, either the file path name is too long (which I solved by putting the folder on the root level of the drive) or when doing a collection, AE says it can't find a file to copy, although when you navigate to the file it says can't be found, it's sitting right there where AE says it wasn't.

Are there any work arounds?

Thanks.

Jeremy

Do you have Adobe's free update to AE 10.0.1? It's just a download away, and it fixes all sorts of AE weirdness, and I'm willing to bet your case of weirdness is included.

Did you know AE 10.0.0 straight out of the box can't deal with AIFF files? Cripes, it's never been a problem before... what's up with that? Well, it's one of the things fixed in AE 10.0.1.

Definitely.

Aw, crap. I thought this would be an easy fix.

I can't ever recall having problems with the Collect Files command...

Could you be trying to collect files spread across a network, which I've never had to do?
It's not Mac Weirdness like screwed-up permissions, is it?

Well, here's the appropriate section of AE Help, anyway...

Jeez, I wish I could be more helpful...

It seems to work both ways, sometimes After Effects can't write to a long file path, and it also can't look too deep in to a file path.

It sucks and is completely hindering how I have to hand this project back. It came as a mess, and now of course I'm trying to fix it.

Well, here's a thought that might alleviate some of the pain: if you know where all these dispersed files are located, put 'em in a Footage folder; it should be at the same folder hierarchy with the AE project file... like this:

PROJECT FOLDER
AE Project File
Footage Folder
Completed Renders folder
Whatnot Folder

When you open the AE project, it'll freak: it can't find ANY footage. But you coolly find the first missing item, navigate to your footage folder, double click on the file in question....

...and AE will find all the other missing files.

I did a version of this, but it wasn't easy, files were everywhere. This is obviously a bug.

I agree. I'll bet Todd Kopriva at Adobe recognizes your name, so I wouldn't hesitate to send in a bug report:

As you can see, I keep the address handy. I wonder if Apple has something similar.....
