4k VFX

I'm trying to figure out the best workflow for VFX that need to be rendered out in 4k. I have RED footage that is 4480x1920 (this needs to be the final resolution). At this resolution even a proxy (when used in the 4k comp) is impossible to work with (just too big). What I have done is:
1. created a comp that's 1920x823 (i am outputting to a preview monitor that needs this resolution to work properly) to work in.
2. created a proxy at half the resolution as the original ( default settings)
3. did the fx work to the shot in the 1920x823 comp.
4. once finished - i created a new render comp that's 4480x1920 and then i drag my 1920x823 comp into this new one.
5. i then told my 1920x823 comp to "Fit to Comp" (bringing it back to it's original size while maintaining my tracking data, scale and over all effect that had been done to my shot)

This would be fine except when I scale the 1920x823 precomp back up it is much softer. i somewhat expected this but I need to find a better way to do this.
Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

How in your workflow are you getting back to the original 4K media for render?

I just had the lower res media set as a proxy. So i just un-check the proxy which in return links back to the original media.

Two things I'd try:
  • Checking "Collapse transformations" on the scaled-up 1920x823 precomp layer in your render comp, or
  • Using the Scale Compositions.jsx script included with AE to go from 1920x823 to 4k instead of nesting and scaling

Hey Walter,
Checking "Collapse transformations" on the scaled-up 1920x823 precomp layer in the render comp did the trick. Thank you very much. I really haven't used that function that much so thats good to know. Thanks again.
