Rotobrush? A matte effect? Auto Trace? How best to remove person from shot
on Oct 12, 2010 at 10:03:45 pm

Please take a look at the short 10 second video at this link.

I need to remove the person who walks into the shot.

I have the complete background available without the actors in it, so if I could use a matte to remove the middle area then I could replace the background.

Not sure if, in this case, rotobrush is a good solution, or perhaps some other After Effects technique.

I have After Effects CS5 Master collection. What would you use in your AE bag of tricks to solve this?

This clip is the entire length of the entire clip.

Thanks

Good thing you've got a clean plate! Nice thinking ahead!

I'd say this situation is custom-made for Rotobrush. However, I can NOT stress how important it is to wrap your head around the proper use of this tool BEFORE you use it for real. When things get complicated, any semblance of intuitive operation mysteriously disappears.

So go here:

Read EVERYTHING, no matter how trivial and picayune it may seem.

hi Rowby.

Make this simple.
1. Track your clean back plate to the background of your clip. Preferably using mocha (comes with AE)
2. Mask in your foreground characters and comp over.

walla, done!

This is a short shot, and these are super easy mattes, just roto (mask) in your foreground people.
Remember, you only need to have a tight, refined matte where your unwanted character intersects your foreground people. Don't waste time on area's of your foreground that are "clean" anyway.

Rotobrush, and all the bells and whistles are nice, but you can nail this in no time with simple masking.

Hi Tom,

So if I understand your suggestion -- it's to just use the pen tool to create the necessary mask areas in this short clip.
