Buying a lap top - Dell XPS 16 and adobe CS4

Hi guys, I need your advice. I'm about to by a new laptop. I'm a motion graphic artist and I mostly use after effects, premiere and photoshop. I am sick of rendering error messages and I am looking for a strong machine that can handle heavy graphics and HD footage editing. It also has to be compatible for high resolution - I want to plug it into a separate screen that can go to 1680x1050 (and potentially more).
So far I was happy with dell. I was thinking of buying the XPS16

Would you go for the Core i7 mobile processor version?
Do you think that a serial drive would be fast and reliable enough?
Does any of the features they mention seem unnecessary or alternatively - need an upgrade? Which features are most important with After Effects and Premiere?
I was hoping not to go over £1000.

Thanks,
Ayakaya

For AE, max out your RAM and processor speed. Hard drive is secondary, graphics card is barely relevant.

You should post on the Premiere forum regarding the hard drive.

I see you are running CS4 -- if you are thinking about upgrading to CS5, make sure to get a 64-bit edition of Windows on your new machine.

I agree with Steve. RAM is your first priority, then CPU, then hard drive. I don't know how easy it will be to find a laptop with an i7 and 8 GB of RAM near £1000.

Does it have to be a laptop? You can get a more powerful, more expandable desktop for less money.

[Walter Soyka] "Does it have to be a laptop? You can get a more powerful, more expandable desktop for less money."

I second Walter's comment. You can use your current laptop for carrying around with you, and the desktop for the heavy lifting. The result: a far happier graphics designer.

Thank you all for the advice.
I'm afraid it does have to be a laptop. I do most of my work when I'm not home. Seems like I might have to stick to a laptop and add an extra 200 for a bigger RAM.
