Render Motion Blur Without the Object it's Blurring

This seems like something that should be simple and I'm missing a basic. But for whatever reason (AKA caffeine withdrawal), I'm not seeing it.

I have an animated character that's being used in a video game. I need to render out JUST the motion blur of that character running so it can be composited underneath the character by the game engine.

In CS4, how can I render JUST the motion blur of an object, without rendering the object itself?

I know I can use a directional blur, etc to simulate motion blur, but it's vital to this game that the motion blur look absolutely authentic, and I've spent a great deal of time scripting the animation speed in AE to match up with the game. Approximating motion blur is vastly inferior to AE's internal algorithm.

Thanks in advance...

I'm pretty sure I recall some third-party blur plugins having a blur-only option, but the other simplest way that comes to mind is to just duplicate the object layer, turn off its blur and use it to track matte the otherwise visible object layer.

Because none of us can think of everything. Glad to help.
