I would like to create a mask on a layer, move it's path around to highlight an area of interest then fix it so the footage behind does the moving.

Is the best/only way to do this to create an adjustment layer, apply the mask then move the position of the footage on the layer beneath ?

Is there a way using expressions or am i over complicating things ?

[Dave Middleton] "I would like to create a mask on a layer, move it's path around to highlight an area of interest then fix it so the footage behind does the moving."

Let's say this footage is a video layer. When this footage behind this mask starts moving, do you intend to see edges of the video moving around as well?

Yes in the extreme. But I'd keep the mask within the video boundary when animating the path in the first stage.

  • You'll need three layers: the video, a duplicate video layer and a solid.
  • Put them in the comp with the solid on top, and the two video layers below.
  • Parent the lower video layer to the upper video layer.
  • On the lower video layer, use the levels effect to make it darker.
  • Make a mask on the solid: circle, rectangle, what have you.
  • On the upper video layer, use the solid as an alpha matte. You should now see brighter video over darker in the shape of the mask.
  • Animate the solid to land on the spot you want on the video.
  • Animate the upper layer to make the picture move violently.

You're done.

Thanks Dave - that's great.
