AE changing imported movie formats when importing? why?
on Aug 22, 2010 at 8:12:00 pm

Hello-

Run into something baffling.

My AE Comp is 1920x1080. When I import footage (mov also at 1920x1080) & place footage clips into the comp, the imported footage is a smaller (4:3) format. I then have to go to Transform & 'fit to comp'.

Two questions:

1. why are the mov.s, that're same format as comp, changing when imported into AE?

2. am I degrading the image when I just go to 'Fit to Comp', rather than get to the bottom of this?

Thanks-
KJ

sounds like a pixel aspect ratio problem. see if it's set to a dvcpro preset.

Just drag the footage onto the Make Comp icon at the bottom of the project window. AE knows what to do from there. You'll probably want to start using the pixel aspect ratio compensation switch at the bottom of the comp window.

You should understand that most 1080 video is NOT 1920 pixels wide.

Thanks. Great info. Will read up more on the pixel aspect resolution.

Do you have a good resource (book or weblink) you'd recommend for learning more about pixel aspect resolution?

[Kathleen Judge] "Do you have a good resource (book or weblink) you'd recommend for learning more about pixel aspect resolution?"

I'm willing to bet there's information here on the COW about it. When you do your search, use "pixel aspect RATIO" and not "pixel aspect RESOLUTION".

Google is good, too.

ae's online manual has a lot of info on par, and it provides several links to more info from the likes of trish and chris meyers:
