Hey there

I'm a designer who has recently made the move from flash to AE for animation.

Love it! But I do have one particular challenge that keeps coming up.

In Flash, when I needed to extend or reduce the length of a animation, I could simply add or remove frames. I don't think this is doable in aftereffects, and you must go into the composition, make your edits and then adjust it's length on the timeline on which it rests.

From this point, I have the cumbersome task of manually moving all the other elements in that composition to accommodate the new timing.

I have a feeling there is a more sophisticated way to do all this ;)

If anyone can shed some light i'd be very grateful! thanks!!

Well, the process you describe is the best way to do it. But you can try this, too:

Nest the AE comp in question in a new comp. Enable Time Remapping on this new layer. By strategically creating and moving keyframes, you can speed up and slow down selected sections of the nested comp. Adding the Time Warp effect, you can smooth out the speed changes a bit.

Hi Steve -- long time, no see. I hope all is well.

Dave's suggestion to use time re-mapping is good if your project is nearly finished, but I think it would complicate a work-in-progress.

You can set a work area, and then use Edit > Extract Work Area to remove frames. I can't think of a similar way to add them.
