Thomson Viper (FilmStream) LUT for AE
on Jul 14, 2010 at 2:32:33 pm

Hi there,
I'm working on a feature film shot with a Thomson Viper.
The footage i received is green tinted, which is normal because of the FilmStream.
I have to make some chroma keying and compositing/vfx work on this shots, so i need a LUT. I've been searching all over and i cant find any. So any tips on how to make one will be much appreciated.

Also, if anyone has some experience working with this kind of footage i'd love to know whats your workflow, as this is my first time with this files.

Thanks.

M.

To properly address the topic of LUTs, it would help to know which version of AE you're using.

Dave, Im using CS4 and CS5.
CS5 has the "apply color LUT" utility, but i couldnt find any .3dl or .cube LUT files for the Viper.

I also own Color Finesse, which can export LUTs. But i dont really know what parameters i should change to make a propper Viper LUT.

Thanks.

I never have to deal with LUTs. There are advantages and disadvantages to playing the little leagues, I guess.

But I did find a link to a potentially-useful document called, "Thomson Viper HD camera reverse LUT". You'll find it here:
http://www.cinematography.net/hd-data.html

Although it's listed as being a PDF, it's really a spreadsheet.

"I never have to deal with LUTs."
So whats your workflow with Viper footage ? Do you color correct it or you just work with the green look ?

Thanks for the link Dave, but i dont really understand that spreadshet. I simply dont know how to translate it to AE. Any tips on that ?

Thanks again.
M.

[Martin Fisher] "So whats your workflow with Viper footage?"

I've never touched the stuff. As I said, I toil in the little leagues.

[Martin Fisher] "...i couldnt find any .3dl or .cube LUT files for the Viper. "

I've tried looking for them myself. No luck -- it's like such things have dropped off the map. Wouldn't the DP or the camera rental house know where to get them?

software to fix Viper's ringing glitches, and lut building, auto and manual how-to's. There's professional lut building software and then there's the good old fashioned human eyeball, depends on your budget.

I own a Viper camera and I do shoot in filmstream mode. There is no special LUT that is needed to remove the green tint. You can balance the color with standard color correction tools. This is much more precise if a chip chart was shot.
