Video Output

As I have learned that AE does not properly support Digital Desktop Preview (only FCP) I am reposting this line of questioning concerning video output.

I am currently using a DVI to HDMI cable to output an HD video image to a Panasonic HD LCD using the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview from Final Cut and it all works fine. My question is, how do I get this same functionality from After Effects CS4? Though Digital Cinema Desktop Preview is an option in the AE Video Preview preferences it does not work at all consistently. Would using a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card give me what I want? I understand that a Matrox MXO2 Mini would do the trick, but I am just a hobbyist and don't really need the critical color correction capabilities of that box and would rather save some money.

Thanks for any info.

Im running a blackmagic intensity one one of our suites feeding to a LG widescreen from AE with no issues. It does seem to slow everything down a bit when the output is enabled though.

i briefly searched the forums on this topic too.

My question to this is why, after buying for my 2010
imac w/ mini output port, can my mac output full 1080p
through a HDMI adaptor as a "second monitor" but can't
route after effects video preview through the same channels??

It may not be the most professional way to output this signal
but it would do the trick for me. All i want is the ability
to see what I'm working on as its own entity on my HDTV.
Everyone in the forums is talking about buying black magic
cards... which seems like an outdated solution since there
have been HDMI outputs directly on laptops! For instance
i have a Pc laptop, a cheap-o, runs perfect 1080p signal through
an HDMI port, but after effects cant see it?!?!?!

Correct. But it's not really an AE limitation. Pretty much any editing/compositing application (Final cut, Avid, Premier, motion, ect) are all going to require a video card with video i/o capabilities to get a video preview.

An option would be to use your TV as your second monitor and then just arrange your windows so that only the preview appears on the second monitor.
