network/data space effect

Has anyone out there ever run into a way to create any sort of network visualization effect in either 2D or 3D space in AE? I'd like to do something similar to using the Tracer object in Cinema 4D (see this post: http://greyscalegorilla.com/blog/2010/06/how-to-use-the-tracer-object-in-ci... to create a collection of nodes with interconnected lines. It doesn't have to represent anything specific, just give the idea of all these interconnected elements coming together to make a whole.

you could use the beam effect to create a line between two points. i'd probably apply the beam effect(s) to an adjustment layer. then select two layers to connect with the beam and hit 'p' to reveal their position properties.
enable expressions for one of the beam points and use the expression pickwhip to point it at one of the layer's positions. do the same for the other point (to the other layer's position).
you should get a line connecting the two -- you'll probably need to adjust the length to get them fully connected.
if you have many points/layers, you may want to create an expression that will use layer indexes to drive the point controls so you'd just need to duplicate the beam effect to apply it to the next series of points...
