I like to use the stroke effect in combination with a mask to reveal images. However, the stroke plugin only allows a maximum brush size of 50. Is there a way to make it larger than 50 without using multiple masks?

you could try the 'layer style' stroke (rather than the effect stroke).

hide the stroke effect, then (with layer selected) choose layer>layer styles>stroke. then twirl down the stroke properties and set the stroke attributes.

You're maxed out at 50. The stroke effect in layer styles won't allow you to animate or reveal the image below, I believe.

So one workaround would be to create a second mask. Duplicate your mask, and then scale it up.

For the Stroke Effect, make sure "All Masks" is checked. And if you are animating the stroke, make sure that "Stroke Sequentially" is checked off.

You'll have to adjust the second mask so that there is no space between the stroke of the first mask and second one. It'll take a little work (not too much), but you will be able to have a stroke that's more than 50px.

The After Effects CC (12.2) update increases the maximum size of the brush for the Stroke effect and Write-on effect to 200 pixels (from the previous maximum of 50 pixels).
