CS5 - how do I change Pixel aspect ratio
on Jun 4, 2010 at 4:07:56 pm

I recently upgraded to CS5 from CS3 and I have run into an issue. Adobe changed the pixel aspect ratios. Unfortunately, my NLE still uses the old PAR's and now everything I render has thin black bars on the sides of the frame. How do I go about changing AE back to the old PARs?

Thanks

-Ben

For a temporary fix, use the comp settings and interpret footage settings. For a more permanent solution, read the information contained here:

You'll immediately notice that this changed in AE 9. The funny thing is, not very many people started crabbing about it until they got AE 10. I can't figure that one out.

Yeah, I never upgraded to CS4 but I used a friend of mine's and noticed his D1 widescreen square pixel setting was different and not accommodating any of my C4D renders. I thought it was a little bug at first but I didn't look into it until I upgraded to CS5. Unfortunately I don't use Final Cut, and my NLE doesn't use the new PARs.

Thanks for the responses.

Well I went straight from CS3 to CS5 so that explains why I didn't notice it. While AE updates the PARs automaticaly for PAL to 1.46 (from 1.42) it does not update my old square pixel comps or solids to 1050 x 576 from 1024 x 576.

It is a nuisance as if you multiply 16x9 you get 1024 x 576 - so I'm guessing the PAL spec is not exactly 16x9 but more like 16.40265x9.... now I'm thinking it would be a good idea to quietly do away with those that wrote the original spec!

Apple made the same fix in Final Cut Pro recently:

You can always keep using the old, wrong numbers if you like.

So there is no way to manually change the pixel aspect ratio when creating a new comp?

Sure, there is: in the comp settings. You'll find it.

By manually I mean custom. I only have the option to set to the new aspect ratios. That workaround worked fine for opening an old files, but i still only get the new PAR's when creating a new comp.
