I'm trying to create some film grain assets so that I can just slap them into comps as I need them instead of having AE do the calculation each time it renders a new frame.

Anyways..i was thinking of making some grain on a black background and then screening it over the top of my movie but I can't get it to work. I guess I should mention that I didn't *actually* render the .mov I just threw my solid into a comp with a black solid and multiplied that comp over my footage...anyways just seeing if someone had a plan of attack on adding grain this way.

Are you multiplying or screening? You've said both.

Here's a great tutorial that can help you understand better compositing in AE and may shed some light on your issues:

Here's a great tutorial on realistic film grain using a method similar to what you're suggesting.
