I just had a thing in CS4 where an audio track in a Pre-Comp was higher than the same track in the master Comp. This was shown in the audio tab levels (as well as through speakers!)

I think I fixed it by changing the resolution from Auto to Full and back again.

Is this a known glitch?

Worth looking out for and checking.

Any advice on how to trust the levels in After Efects?

I do not think you should trust the levels in AE- it's not an app meant for audio. Fix and check your audio in Premiere, FCP or any other editing program.

I just finished a promo last night with not much AE work in it, but enough to justify rendering the entire 30 seconds. The original edit in FCP had wild sound, lip-sync sound, sound effects, music and voiceover announcer.

When I rendered my 30-second comp, I included NO audio. Just video. I brought it into a duplicated FCP edit timeline, turned off the existing video tracks, added the recently-rendered video......

.....and everything worked like a charm. Even the lip-sync stuff. No problems whatsoever.

The moral: you rarely, if ever, need to render audio in AE.
