Split Color Channels for Mattes

I know this is really simple to do, I just have never had to do it.
I would just like to seperate my color channels out and then use them to create a matte of that particular channel in black and white as shown here:

Check out the Channel effects.

A simple one for using the color channel values as alpha channel values is the Set Channels effect.

Okay cool. I was doing it right. I just had to be sure. Also the shot I was testing it on wasn't very ideal since it had no clear difference between the channels. Thanks.
