CS5 Audio sync problems
on May 11, 2010 at 9:19:50 am

I am getting a ram preview issue in AE cs5.
The aif audio file is being shifted at random when scrubing (though the wave view looks correct). the ram preview won't correct itself unless I purge then preview from the start of the comp.

Renders seem to get screwed too.

Seems like a major bug....
Anyone else??????

If anyone else is seeing this issue, please report back by saying what kind of audio file you're using. Then, convert the audio to another format (such as WAV) and let us know if that works better. If you want to attach a file to a bug report, send it to aebugs [at] adobe [dot] com.

OKay, I've reported it......It now seems that, if I convert it to wav I get much better (so far all-good) results

[Michael Rosen] "It now seems that, if I convert it to wav I get much better (so far all-good) results"

I'm beginning to wonder if that aiff file you started with really WAS an aiff file. It sounds like it may have been compressed in some way, and AE traditionally HATES compressed audio.

Any serious program for video production hates compressed audio. And me too!
Audio compression is the very last thing to do in a production chain, the space needed for uncompressed audio is ridiculous compared to HD video.

It absolutely WAS an uncompressed .aif file.
The work around is to convert it to a .Wav for now.

Before I figured that out, I was using logic to redo the audio.

Strange. Sure about the sample rate?

Aif, 44.1, and 16bits.
I was working with 1 layer which was a retimed proress 422 HQ 1080 file at 29.97fps
and 1 adjustment layer for a vingett. Thats it.
Happened repeatedly audio would skip, repeat...be in the wrong place etc.
I heard of others with this problem in Cs5.
Adobe knows now.

The audio should be 48 kHz for video. 44.1 is typical for CD.

The way After Effects works, I don't think it makes a difference at all.
It never has before.
But, as soon as my clients let up, I'll do a test.
Thnks.

I have the exact same problem. With previews it's okay if it doesn't work perfectly (even if it's annoying as h*ll), but the real problem is that even the renders get messed up. I also use 44khz 16 bit aiff, it has always worked for me before CS5.

We do have the same problem. We worked with wave and aiff audio. Both gave us problem with the ram preview and the render. Before, with cs4, we did have that problem.

I've got the same sync problem with AIFF uncompressed.

[Milan Michalik] "I've got the same sync problem with AIFF uncompressed"

Did you read the advice given by Todd Kopriva, Adobe's documentation guy, earlier in this thread?
Did you follow it? I advise that you do.

Yes, it's weird that AIFFs would give AE 10 fits. Who would have thought?

It actually seems to work better when I convert the audio files to wav. I would prefer to be spared from this step, but at least it's better than no audio at all (or wicked audio).

Just to chuck my hat in - I'm also getting this problem with an AIFF I generated from Ableton Live. Weirdness.

Here's a new technical support document on this issue, which acknowledges a known issue with AIFF, recommends transcoding to WAV, and mentions a fix that is in the works:

"Audio playback or RAM preview is scrambled or jumps around in After Effects CS5 or Premiere Pro CS5"

I've solved the same sync problem in AE replacing the .aif with .wav or a simple .mov quicktime movie containing the sound. Any sound editor capable to save as one of these formats will do the job.

Luis,

You shouldn't need to do this, since the updates that I mention above fix issues with AIFF files.
