I WANT the 3d objects to composite based on layer order

I have a comp with many many layers. They are all 3d. I am animating them undulating (rotation and z position). I want them to composite like 2d layers, meaning visibility is determined by layer order. I know I could precomp each one. But it's a lot of layers and I would like to maintain some control without digging down into each precomp. Is there a way to do this? or is this a dumb question?

I've seen some posts on this as a problem or bug, but I haven't been able to recreate it

it's a lot of work, but if you put a 2D layer between each 3D layer, it will work the way you want. A blank adjustment layer works best.

1- in 3d space you need to make sure that the layers are in the same order in z space as they are as layers in the comp

2- if you have done that, and you still experience problems, make sure you do not have layer styles on your layers ( if you imported them from a photoshop file with styles). One other thing that causes AE to mess up you 3d layers is if you have a 2d layer in between.

I have put adjustment layers between each of the layers. It is still not working. Not sure what I'm doing wrong,

Ahha it worked. Have to be looking through camera not front view.
Thanks

Glad it worked- just be careful, adjustment layers are 2d layers, and mixing up 2d and 3d layers does not make AE very happy.

Here's a page that explains all of the relevant details:
"3D layer interactions, render order, and collapsed transformations"
