So this is probably a super easy question to answer. I've searched this site and I've searched the internet for help, but I've been unsuccessful. I think the problem is is that I don't know the name of what I'm trying to do.

I've just started in AE and I'm trying to make text appear as a car drives past the frame as if the text was hiding behind the car. I'm sure I need to do something with keyframing and masks but I'm lost after that.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

Hey Nathan,

try masking the text and then reveal/move one side of the mask as the car drives by. Shouldn't be too hard, good luck!

You can rotoscope the car with an animated mask.

If you just happen to have CS5 of After Effects, there's an incredible Rotobrush feature:
