about projects and comps...
on Apr 27, 2010 at 2:25:01 pm

Hello again everyone.

If I have a project, call it Project A, and within it, it contains a composition from another project, Project B. So far so good.

If I change something in the Comp from Project B separately, and then open Project A, the changes are not shown. In other words, Project A seems to have it's own, virtual copy of the comp from Project B, and NOT a "link" to Project B's comp.

Is there a way to "link" compositions and not have them be virtual copies?

Clear as mud? As always, thanks for the help.

[Scott Morrison] "Is there a way to "link" compositions and not have them be virtual copies? "

Sorry, no. When an old AE project is imported into a newer AE project, it has nothing more to do with that older project whatsoever.

Well, it may be a poopie in this instance, but imagine if what you desired was the normal state of affairs for AE.

Let's say you borrow comps from old projects to save work; lots of people do. But now, you have to revisit one certain old project. Think of the chaos that would ensue if you started making changes to comps that appeared in other projects. You may not know about it until it's too late.

So all in all, it's not a bad thing in the long run.

Agreed, but what about having the option to "link" to another project (or comp) as well as "embed" the project or comp.

I, for one, would be downright giddy with the possibilities.

[Scott Morrison] "...what about having the option to "link" to another project..."

I guess you're a lot more optimistic than I am. I see bad things happening with a "linked" project. The file can get corrupted, it can be deleted, renamed, moved... what have you. Then the link's gone.

That's scary.

Of course, when I was a kid, I hid when the monsters showed up in the monster movies. Perhaps I'm easily scared.

Monsters notwithstanding, the "linking" method of joining projects is common amongst 3D applications, such as Maya, and many have come to rely on such functionality.

But...we live in an imperfect world, doubly true when it comes to software.

(BTW - My personal anathema happened to be clowns. Talk about scary!)
