[Ben Hawkins] "What is the best way to import a FCP timeline into After Effects CS4? "

The BEST way? Get out your wallet -- you'll be spending $500 to get Automatic Duck, which does precisely what you want, and does it better than anything else.

There are a few options available beyond Automatic Duck.

If you have Premiere CS4 (fully up to date), you can actually import a FCP XML file and send that to After Effects, but I'm not sure how well FX & transformations carry over.

There's also a script from the Popcorn Island guys.

ProVideo Coalition also has a script available.

Lastly, Boris has a tool called XML Transfer that is a bit more robust, but runs $299.

There's some information at the bottom of this page of After Effects Help. Paul summed it up pretty well, but you might want to follow the lin to the Help page, if only for the link to an article that reviews the options.
