How to clean up file trail?
on Apr 23, 2010 at 12:35:21 pm

When importing a comp or layer from one project to another... is there a way to remove the trail of files from previous uses and start fresh without reproducing that element from scratch?

I have a production logo I need to use again and again... and every time I do its trail gets longer because its file attaches every previous use to it.
GAH!

help.

I'm not sure what you mean by a file trail. If you mean you're importing a previous project just to get to one logo and all the project files come with it and you keep importing subsequent projects, each one with a previous projects files in it...
Yes. Just delete the file trail in your project panel and only keep the layers/compositions you need. There's no reason to keep those extraneous files kicking around.

Or make sure you only ever import the original version.

Or create folder in project window, move all those clips in there so they don't mess your project window.
If you need some clip from there, just open folder, use, then close it again.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you might want to use the Collect Files command. Here's the straight skinny on it:

Hey Dave,

Just tried that and still hasn't worked.

this is really strange as my friend has the same version of after effects on his 65 bit vista machine and he can see up to 3GB of RAM per core.

Maybe i need to edit the preferences file?

i'm starting to think that it was a bit of a bad idea to order the 32GB :S

Thanks, guys!
This was helpful... The file management tutorial sent me in the right direction.

Extraneous visual stuff confuses me - I like a clean project window.
I'm learning that the file "trail" is necessary for more advanced applications. I just need to figure out how to pare it down a bit.

Lots to learn!
