The QuickTime movie was so large because you were using the default settings.

A QuickTime movie is a container that can contain many different kinds of video. The default is video encoded with the Animation codec at 100% quality (which is lossless). These files are huge.

A common and normal way of working is to create a master using a format like QuickTime with the Animation codec, and then do compression with a dedicated compressor like Adobe Media Encoder, Sorenson Squeeze, or QuickTime Pro.

What compression you choose is largely determined by your audience, playback device, and delivery mechanism. See this page for information about planning your project with final delivery specifications in mind.

See this section for information about compression options in After Effects.
