I really like the ink bleeding effect like in the end credits to Sherlock Homes

I have done some searching and experimented with masks, but it just isn't the same look. Any ideas on how this could be done or what effects I should try? Thanks

In cases like this, I say that practical effects are best! Very organic-looking, y'know...
  • Get some ink
  • Get some white fabric
  • Get some flat lighting
  • Set up your camera to shoot straight down -- build a copy stand, in other words
  • Sprinkle some ink on the stand's surface
  • Roll the camera, and drop the fabric on the ink
  • Repeat until you have a good stable of high-contrast shots

If you want to get tricky, you can also influence the path the ink takes by rubbing a little candle wax into the fabric in the pattern of your choice.

Hmmmm...Get my hands dirty the old fashioned way huh? Well, I suppose I will give it a try. Could be adventurous. Then I guess I could just set the footage to Multiply so that I could use a different background.

God, I love good practical effects!
I was thinking it was done with ink tanks shot at a high frame rate, but I like your suggestion more. Great tip on the wax. Now I really wanna go try that myself.
