[Kevin Allar] "any ideas? "

Yup. If it's on, turn off multiprocessing for now and try again. Then read this:

Also: using Open GL to speed up your renders? Don't. Turn it off for rendering.

Then: got any HDV video in your project? Read on:

Dave's Stock Answer #1:

If the footage you imported into AE is any kind of the following -- footage in an HDV acquisition codec, MPEG1, MPEG2, AVCHD, mp4, m2t, H.261 or H.264 -- you need to convert it to a different codec.

These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame information. However, the frames in between do NOT have complete information. Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.

In order to maintain peak rendering efficiency, AE needs complete information for each and every frame. But because these kinds of footage contain only partial information, AE freaks out, resulting in a wide variety of problems.

Dave's suggestions are definitely the first things to correct ... I'll just add that, since you mentioned an odd-numbered amount of RAM, there seems an increased chance that you have a mix-match set of RAM sticks ... once you rule out the more obvious possibilities, you may need to consider whether your system is having RAM issues in general that are unrelated to AE, but that affect AE.

Ooooohhhh, I almost forgot -- here's another common reason for AE weirdness:

Got AE 9.02 installed? If not, get the free upgrade on the Adobe web site.
