Hello,

My MS Intellimouse (which I LOVED by the way), finally died. I replaced it with a Microsoft Explorer Mouse. Not a bad mouse, still getting used to it.

Problem is, the mousewheel no longer zooms in for AE. When I scroll the mousewheel, regardless of the direction, it zooms out. Zoom IS, however, working properly in every other program I use it to zoom with (Paint Shop Pro, various 3rd party programs, even in the Zaxwerks plugins)... Just not AE.

Anyone experience this before and/or know a fix?

What operating system? What version of After Effects (including updates)?

Hmmmm... I just tried the same setup (same OS, After Effects version, and an Explorer 4.0 mouse), and I'm not seeing the same behavior. Rolling the wheel forward and backward with the pointer over the Composition panel zooms in and out as it should.

Please file a bug. Here's a link to the feature-request/bug-report form.

Also, check to see if there are updates for the mouse driver. And it wouldn't hurt to try some different settings for scroll wheel speed and sensitivity in the Windows Control Panel.

Sorry I don't have a ready answer.

Hi -

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with a MS Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 and AE CS4 with the latest updates, running on Vista 64 bit. I can zoom out (waaaaay out), but the zoom in with the mouse wheel does not work at all, nor does scrolling the thumb with the mouse wheel when I'm in the timeline or project view. These features work with the same AE CS4 version running on Windows XP Pro 32 bit (but a different mouse - MS Optical Mouse 3000). I've tried changing the sensitity settings, and a number of settings, with no solution. It's very frustrating, because this was a feature I used all the time. Thanks.

Glad to know I'm not alone.

If I plug in a wired mouse, the zoom works as expected. I also seem to be having zoom issues with this mouse in Picasa. This leads me to believe it's a problem between the Microsoft Mouse driver and some Windows API call that AE and Picasa are both using.

I just tried submitting a support ticket to M$, but their ticket system is down and they "apologize for the inconvenience." Ugh.

OOOH!!!! FIXED THE PROBLEM!! By going to a different mouse driver!

How to solve, in 10 easy steps:

1) Go to control panel... Device Manager.

2) Locate your mouse in the device list.

3) Right click it, and go to "Update Driver."

4) Select "Browse my computer for driver software."

5) Choose the "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" option.

6) Uncheck the "Show compatible hardware" checkbox.

7) Under "Manufacturer," choose Microsoft.

8) Change the model to "Microsoft USB IntelliMouse."

9) Ignore any warnings that come up about it possibly being incompatible.

10) Your mouse will freeze for a moment, and then come back, with FULL ZOOMING ACTION in After Effects.

!!!!

Hope this helps!

I was SOOO excited to try this after being frustrated as all heck with my Wireless Mouse 5000. I followed your instructions (albeit with the changes necessary because I am running Windows 7).

No good. Same problem.

I went to Microsoft and updated the drivers for the mouse...still no good. I even tried every possible driver I could think of..

nada.

But thank you for the tip. I'll keep fussing with it.

It could be the Wireless Mouse 5000 simply won't take another mouse's driver. :(

And in some of my tests to find a mouse that worked, the mouse stopped working altogether, forcing me to resort to keyboard shortcuts to continue.

The only problem with this solution on my end so far is that the scroll wheel acceleration is way too high, and changing it in settings has no effect.

Sorry it didn't work for you - You may just have to bite the bullet and get a different mouse. Sucks.

Hi,

I had the same problem, my new Microsoft mouse wouldn't zoom in or out in After Effects, although it would in Google Chrome and other programs, so I tried your steps.
And when I came to step 10, my mouse froze like said, and then my PC showed the Blue Screen of Death, rebooted, got another BOD, rebooted again and started System Recovery, I tried that but afterwards it failed and rebooted, I tried System Recovery 3 times, and only then it worked, but I'm glad my PC is working now.
I think it my mouse which probably isn't equal to yours (Wireless Mobile Mouse its called)

I just wanted to say this for people who will also try it.

Greetings,

Nathan

I had the same problem but found a solution!
Hope this works for you guys as well.

Here you can get the X-Mouse Driver: http://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm

In the preferences you don't have to change much, just set "Wheel Up"
to "Mouse Wheel Sroll Up".

That should do it. Of course, the driver needs to be running all the time.
But hey, you can ZOOM in AE! Isn't that incredible? ;-)

I now this post is almost a year older than the previous ones. But I just purchases a new mouse Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000. Was having the same problem in AE with zooming. Here is the solution. I'm assuming the software hasn't changed much just driver updates. Get the lastest software update for from microsoft. In the mouse properties panel under the "Wheel" tab click the blue underline link that says "Identify programs that don't scroll correctly" then click the "add" button. find AE CS4 or whatever program. Click apply then click OK. This feature was designed for programs that do not support "Smooth Scrolling". You don't even have to reboot or restart AE, worked just fine after changing this mouse setting.

Ben Romer got it 100% right and was the only thing that worked for me. Except instead of "Mouse Wheel Sroll Up" It's "Mouse Wheel Up" and you also have to change "Wheel down" to "Mouse Wheel Down".

This problem has been annoying me for months but I figured it was because I needed to format and do a fresh install of Windows. When that didn't fix it, I did a google search and found this.
