After Effects added extra pixels on my transparent FLV
on Feb 12, 2010 at 6:56:53 am

Hey, I've noticed today that After Effects adds extra pixels to my FLV renders. My render is suppose to be 281 x 230, that's what all my settings are set at. And only when I render as a transparent FLV, my render becomes 300 x 234. So I started looking back at my other renders of the same format and I noticed they all had extra pixels put in. Anybody else ever run into this problem?

I'm running Windows Vista 64bit with Adobe CS4. My colleague tested the same file on his machine (Mac running Windows Vista) and the same problem happened.

My final comp is set at 281 x 230. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
RD

I posted this from home last night, now that I'm at work I can get the actual numbers:

Comp size: 238x183; flv with alpha
rendered size: 240x192; flv with alpha

Why would After Effects add 2 pixels to the width and 9 pixels to the height?

Could it be in the settings some kind of locked aspect ratio setting?

Just re-checked everything again and I can't find anything of the sorts. Thanks though

FLV is a square pixel format, if you work a differnt pixel ratio the render process convert the file, check your comp_setting and set ratio to square pixel. you can olso render a mov_ animation file, then use adobe media encoder to create any kind of compression you want from master.
good luck
cheers

Thanks for the tip. I've checked my Pixel Aspect Ratio and it's set at Square Pixels. I've also tried to render a MOV file and use Media Encoder, still the same results. And this is happening on 2 separate machines.

Thanks tho.

Am I really the only one with this issue? Cause it's pretty easy to reproduce.. If I'm using anything other than 16px X 16px blocks, it rounds it up (or down) to fit this size. Very weird.

Any help at all?

You are not the only one. I also find that creating FLV files can be a true pain. For no reason at all they love to crop videos undesirably.

Even if you create a square FLV from a square MOV file, it crops the video on the sides and adds a black frame to the left and right.

So I've recreated the issue, and posted a video on youtube at

Please follow the link for an HD version where you can see the actual numbers I've used.
It's also effecting all my FLVs, and not just the ones with an alpha.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I know it's been a long time since you wrote this post, but I've encountered the same problem as you and cannot seem to find a solution anywhere on the Web.

Have you been able to solve it? And if so, how?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Another year has gone since the last post. I still got the same issue.

In CS4, my 8 pixels on the edge of FLV will be stretched.
In CC, they will be replaced by pure black.

My resolution is 1240x600, not a weird resolution compared with Rob Dupuis's setting. But I know it's not a standard res.

I currently think, this is purely FLV's problem, and AE doesn't do a good job too.

But I also noticed that, if it's not an FLV in my comp, then most of the time I can render an FLV correctly. So use it as an output, but not an input, will get around the problem.

Hope that helps.
