I've been working on an effects shot where I have a proton pack firing (the weapon of choice from the Ghostbusters).

So far the only way I've been able to get the stream to fluctuate like in the films is to use the Wave Warp plug in. Unfortunately, this means that the origin points I set with the stream no longer matter- as the Wave Warp will make the origin and direction points useless while the stream waves about them. In this current situation I need to keyframe every single frame in order to ensure the streams originate from the wand.

Can anyone suggest a better method or a possible fix to ensure the stream originates from the origin point? Here's a screen cap to show you the shot I'm doing.

I'm thinking of using the Advanced Lightning as a source for a Displacement Map with a Solid used as the container layer. You should also benefit from tracking the muzzle.
You should also take a look at this COW Tutorial from Eran as an alternative -
