Is there a way to replace a comp with another comp in your time line just like you can replace footage with other footage?

Yes, it's called the "Replace Footage" command.

You can hold the alt key (on a pc) and click and drag the comp from the Project list down onto and on-top-of an existing comp in the timeline. The new comp will replace the old one.

If the old comp is using a mask from the next layer, turn it off first. Otherwise you will replace the masking layer.

Hope this helps.

They replace footage command doesn't work for replacing an actual composition with another...but the holding option and dragging works perfectly.

It's amazing how long one can go without knowing a simple shortcut like that!

Yeah, that's right, you can replace footage in two different places in AE. One is in the project window, which replaces the entire footage file in the project, and in the comp, where you can replace a piece of footage with a comp if you choose.

I too got stuck with a problem where the replace footage command in the project did not have the "desired effect" nested inside my main comp. I think maybe something was messed up, as this technique replaced by entire comp with just one layer of footage from a a recently modified AI file. Funnt, because I do this many times during a project with great results - until today.

Onlt by importing the AI file under a new name, then "alt dragging" the AI file as a comp from the project pannel into the few nested comps where it was ten replaced - I managed to get back on track.

So in some cases I think the two techniques are not the same, even though replacing footage in the project panel seems to be the safest technique most of the time.
