You're talking about editing and assembly, not compositing.
It would be best to place your clips into your vide editor on lower tracks and add text either from your video editor or from AE onto upper tracks and render within the editor to your final output codec.
it all depends on editing flexibility. If your POSITIVE of your videos timings your fine rendering that out separately and laying text on top of that. If you have ANY possible need to slide any of the clips or tweak the timing, then precomp things and composite those comps into your final comp.
