Doing a big project in cs4.

Lots of layers. Lots of HD. Lots of problems.

Any tips on how to make the memory management work?

Crashing (20+ times today). Beachball of death just opening a folder. Can't render movies, only png sequences.
RAM previewing works intermittently.
Have to purge memory before every preview.
Have to render with 'secret' settings on.

I'm on an 8 core with 12gb of ram.
Can't make multi-processing work. I have open-gl switched off.
Converted all footage to Apple Intermediate codec.
Upgraded to 9.02.

So far, this is the most buggy AFX upgrade I've used. Unbelievable.
I'd go back to CS3 in a blink if I could. Almost lost a job over this.
Not just me. My colleague in the next room has the same problems.
Same problem on my other machine too. Very unhappy. Sort your product out Adobe.

Moaning aside, any constructive help?

Believe it or not, you're light on RAM. No kidding.

To be really effective, AE needs a minimum of 2GB/core when multiprocessing. You've got 8 cores for 16 GB, but 12 GB RAM. If you want to use multiprocessing, reduce the number of cores AE uses to 4 @ 2.5GB . You'll still have memory left over for the operating system, which is good, but much for any other apps you want have open.

Open GL rendering in AE is a joke. You're correct not to use it.

Apple Intermediate Codec is okay to use, but if it were my gig, I probably would have gone with ProRes. I'd render in QT movies with PNG codec... or the codec being used by the next person who gets your stuff.

64 bit OS?

And, I know you are talking about a memory issue but you do in fact have your scratch disks for AE caching open to a partition that can handle the content yes?
