Say I have a greenscreen foreground that is moving around and can be tracked easily enough, what is the best method to apply that tracking information to the background so that the movement is consistent with what it would look like in reality if the background was a bit further away from the camera than the foreground?

I'm guessing that the background with move in the same directions but just less so... If I am correct in saying this, what would be the best expression to use to achieve this?
Thanks guys

I don't think you'd need to write an expression; you could do this with 3D layers.

Place your foreground and background layers like you normally would. Parent the background to the foreground, and make them both 3D. Add a camera. Adjust the anchor point of the background in the Z-axis only.

You will control the parallax effect through the camera settings and the z-anchor on the background.

What you're referring to is a simple version of what is often referred to as 'camera mapping' or 'camera projection'. See this page for a link to a free chapter from Mark Christiansen's book that describes how to do this sort of work.

There is a bit of expression you can use in this PDF.. took me a long time to find it.
Title is "Simulate realistic motion (motion parallax)"
