In cleaning up my computer I realized that I now have 3 versions of After effects - 6.5, 7 and CS4. Is it okay to move the plug-ins from the older software into the CS4 plug-in folder? I'm working on a Macpro tower. OS 10.6.1

Some third-party plugins work on the same machine by just copying them to the new AE version's plugin folder, but some require re-installing. So, what I've usually found easiest is to copy them all, open AE and try one plugin from each set, then re-install the ones that don't work.

You can create shorcuts for the plugins in their original files/folders and then simply copy these (shorcuts) to the new location.

And finally, some plug-ins just aren't compatible with later versions of After Effects. But do what David & Roland said, and you can often find updates for the ones that don't work on the manufacturers' websites. This may be a paid upgrade in some cases.
