Illustrator file not coming in clear in After Effects
on Oct 16, 2009 at 12:14:44 pm

I have read all the forums and still my problem is occuring. I have an illustrator file, it looks wonderful in illustrator when I zoom in 1000%, but as soon as I import it in (file.ai) it comes out terrible. I have the "continuous rasterize on" as well as the "square pixels" happening. Still, looking really bad.

I have attached a photo of whats going on.

Please someone have any tips? What's am I missing!?

Thanks,
Michelle

Versions? Moving between CS2, 3, 4?

Saved as AI or eps?

It is CS4 Illustrator to CS4 After Effects. I am using a .ai illustrator file.

Try an EPS...

AI is good if you want to bring layers in from illustrator...but I have great luck with a simple one graphic using eps...they are smaller too!

Tried the eps. It is still looking awful. Not like a vector at all but a really low quality image. I thought the point of vectors was to never lose image quality.

Is there any other setting I could be missing?
Thanks!
Michelle

If you included any bitmapped layers in your Illustrator document, you'll have trouble scaling them up in AE. Illustrator DOES NOT convert bitmap images into vector images. The images remain bitmaps. Sorry.

You are missing something...I do that all the time. No issue. You have SOMETHING turned on or off in your save settings from illustrator.

Try it on another machine maybe...or download a stock eps from Adobe's site to test and make sure that works...

First, clarify what you mean by "zooming".

If you're _scaling_ the vector layer and it's getting pixelated, that's a problem. If you're _zooming_ (meaning just changing the magnification in the Composition panel), then there is no problem.

from "Zoom":
"After Effects renders vector objects before zooming (scaling for preview), so some vector objects may appear jagged when you zoom in on them. This apparent pixelation for zooms does not affect scaling of layers or rendering to final output."

See this page for information about keeping vector layers sharp using continuous rasterization.

Good point Todd! I didn't notice the language usage...

I know this may be A VERY, VERY, VERY LATE REPLY and i'm so sorry i just found this.

for the sake of other members' concerns, i'll try sharing this..

I encountered the same problem,
i tried those but none is effective:

1. made an .eps file uploaded to AE
2. made a solid object and copy and pasted the vector
3. made a large comp then resized it to smaller scale and put
the comp to main compostion..

This was my biggest frustration really
but discovered a technique for this!

1. on illustrator, better resize your pic to a bigger size
2. make a solid in AE, and better make it in another composition a bit larger than
your main composition (and it's on another composition this makes it more flexible
and practical when you'll have to edit elements in vector, i.e. animate per point, etc..)
3. copy your enlarged/resized vector and paste it directly on your solid object in AE, and
voila! you got crisp vectors in ae..

But this seems to have a limitation depends on the size of your vector. but i won't make it super big as it can eat up a bit of RAM or the file's size.
This can do the job and hope i helped a lot..

if there are other method, just feel free to comment. I have so much to learn and to improve
