I'm starting an animation project using images generated in photoshop. I want the project to be at a professional resolution and I want to submit it to festivals as well as distribute on DVD. What's the best format to use? I'm working in the uk

Since you don't know exactly what you'll need to deliver -- other than PAL-frame rate material -- I would work in a 1920x1080 comp at 25 frames/sec. There should be an AE comp preset for that.

This comp will be in 16x9, High-Definition. If you must display at 4x3 at some point, you'll either have to letterbox or centerpunch the video, i.e. chopping off the right and left sides of the 16x9 picture. If Widescreen is okay, you can always downconvert to PAL widescreen.

It's a LOT easier to reduce the size of something big than it is to make something small larger.
