weird message box? post production could not be performed...
on Sep 28, 2009 at 2:56:38 pm

hi,
For editing purposes, I have been converting canon 5d mark II footage from 30P H.264 to "29.97fps Apple Intermediate Codec" within After effects.
at the end of many clips, when the render is on the last frame (or perhaps entirely completed?) ...I get this message:

"post production operation could not be performed because item to be replaced is missing"

clips *seem* ok.

should be worried that this will blow up in my face later during the editing/dvd making process?

what exactly does this message mean?
thanks for any help you can provide.

[edwin gendron] "For editing purposes, I have been converting canon 5d mark II footage from 30P H.264 to "29.97fps Apple Intermediate Codec" within After effects. "

That's an EXTREMELY bad idea. Horrible. Bad choice of workflow. I strongly recommend you use Compressor to convert it to ProRes -- not AIC -- and forget about AE for the moment.

In this situation, AE isn't the right tool for the job. Here's just one reason why:

Dave's Stock Answer #1:

If the footage you imported into AE is any kind of the following -- footage in an HDV acquisition codec, MPEG1, MPEG2, mp4, m2t, H.261 or H.264 -- you need to convert it to a different codec.

These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame information. However, the frames in between do NOT have complete information. Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.

In order to maintain peak rendering efficiency, AE needs complete information for each and every frame. But because these kinds of footage contain only partial information, AE freaks out, resulting in a wide variety of problems.

You don't have ProRes? Why not?

What version of FCP are you running? If it's too early, it may not know anything about HDV.....
And what version of Quicktime do you have?
And come to think of it, what kind of Mac do you have, and what OS are you running?

That shiny new camera of yours may have obligated you to get a whole bunch of new stuff just so you can do things with it.

running:
G5 powerPC 1.6G ram
FCP 4.5 hd (old timer)
QT v7.6.4.

I *have* to avoid buying "stuff".
I *do* have to make this work somehow.

I just did some checking.

If you're still running FCP 4.5 on a G4 Powerbook, you're in trouble. Your system is simply not up to the task of working with video from a Canon D5 Mark II, and there's no way to upgrade what you currently have. You're trying to compete at the Indianapolis 500 in a Studebaker.

Your options as I see them are this:
  • Spend a ton of money to upgrade both hardware and software
  • Stick with using DV and stills from the Canon
  • Sell that Canon RIGHT NOW while it's still a hot camera and you can recoup at least tome of your money

Video from that Canon camera? Hey, if you want live on the bleeding edge, you'd better be prepared to bleed a little.

Find somebody who's running at LEAST FCP 6, and ask 'em for a favor: convert that footage to 29.97, Animation codec, audio at 16 bits and 48kHz. Bring a portable hard drive to hold the files.

Your list of options is extremely short.... as in almost non-existent.

have succesfully made a DVD w short clips of canon footage and matched to dv footage.
workflow is extremely slow though.

how about using a fast modern (borrowed) computer to convert to prores then to Apple intermediate codec then using *that* to edit with?

If you have successfully cut AIC video ON YOUR OWN MACHINE before, it sounds like it would work.

If you haven't, you're taking a chance.
