scaling down psd file resolution problems
on Sep 24, 2009 at 7:12:59 am

i have a psd file that i am importing into AE. if I scale it down more then 50% in AE vs. bringing in the file already scaled down in photoshop, i get jaggedy lines in the one that i am scaling down in AE. does AE not handle scaling down so well? to see an example look at the lines in the video posted here - http://myodddays.com/
thanks!

When scaled down in AE, some of those thin likes may be about a pixel or so in width.... not good for nice, smooth lines... ESPECIALLY when they're black lines on white, which will show every little imperfection..

You can either add a tiny amount of blur to the scaled down image, or fix it in Photoshop.

yes, understand this. but, why when i do a 20% scale in photoshop compared to a 20% scale in AE, AE is giving me different results. does AE not handle scale in the same way photoshop does?

No, it doesn't.

i drew a line and scaled them both down the exact same way in AE and photoshop and saved them at the same size and the 2 are close looking, but not exactly the same looking.

photoshop lets you determine the interpolation, as bicubic for enlargement looks the best. does AE not let you decide on this option? i am assuming this is why they do not look the same.

here are the 3 image files -

I guess you're right, but actually, I haven't ever paid it much attention. Since this one-pixel-thick jaggedness is a known condition in AE, people just work around it.

Notice that I didn't say it was a BUG, but a condition. I'm pretty sure if Adobe COULD fix it, they would... but for some reason, they can't without screwing something else up.
